Daily Current Affairs Updates: 11 February 2015



1) INS Viraat to be decommissioned in 2016:
--> The Navy is learnt to have taken the call to retire the decrepit warhorse INS Viraat, the aircraft carrier that has had a service life of 56 years as on date — first as HMS Hermes in the Royal British Navy and in its present avatar since 1987.
--> INS Viraat, India's second aircraft carrier commissioned in 1987, is slated to have a grand farewell next year.
--> Viraat — which saw action in the Falklands War and remained for well over a decade the sole aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean region following the decommissioning of the first Indian carrier INS Vikrant in 1997 — is slated to have a grand farewell at the International Fleet Review at Visakhapatnam in February 2016.

2) Narendra Modi crossed 10 million follower mark on Twitter:
--> Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed the 10 million mark in terms of number of followers on the popular social media platform Twitter.
--> Modi, who made his Twitter debut in January 2009, is the second most followed politician on Twitter, behind US President Barack Obama and ahead of Mitt Romney (USA).
--> Besides, he is also the third most followed world leader behind Obama and the Pope.

3) President to open Udyanotsav on 13 Feb 2015:
--> President Pranab Mukherjee will declare open the annual Udyanotsav (Garden Festival) 2015 at the Mughal Gardens in Rashtrapati Bhavan on 13 Feb 2015.
--> The main attraction of this year are tulips.
--> "About 10,000 tulips in vivid colours of red, orange and yellow mixed with red, pink, purple and white are expected to bloom in phases up to March 10," a Rashtrapati Bhavan release said.

4) Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar scheme revised:
--> The Union Sports Ministry has revised the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar scheme, which was introduced in 2009 to promote involvement of corporates and institutional boards in sports.
--> As per the revised scheme, the award will be given in four categories such as, (a) identification and nurturing of budding/young talent, (b) encouragement of sports through Corporate Social Responsibility, (c) employment of sportspersons and sports welfare measures and (d) sports for development.

5) SpiceJet launched "Cheaper Than Train Fares" sale:
--> SpiceJet on 11 February 2015 announced the launch of the ‘Cheaper Than Train Fares’ sale offer with one-way fares pegged at a starting price of just Rs 599 all-inclusive for domestic flights.
--> Bookings under this latest Spicejet offer are open now and will close at midnight on February 13, 2015.
--> The travel period covered in this sale is from July 1, 2015 to October 24, 2015.

6) Krishna Chaudhary took charge as DG of ITBP:
--> Senior IPS officer Krishna Chaudhary on 11 February 2015 took charge as the Director General (DG) of the border guarding force Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
--> He succeeded Subhas Goswami.  He is a 1979-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer.

7) India Cements transfered CSK to new subsidiary:
--> BCCI President-in-exile N Srinivasan led India Cements' board on 11 February 2015 approved transfer of IPL team CSK to a wholly-owned subsidiary Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd.
--> A decision to this effect was taken at a Board meeting of the company held in Chennai.

8) Star India acquired Telugu TV channel Maa:
--> Star India Pvt. Ltd, a unit of 21st Century Fox, on 11 February 2015 announced the acquisition of Telugu television channel network Maa Television Network Ltd, as the company expands its presence in the movies and general entertainment genre across India.

--> The deal marks Star’s biggest acquisition in India and the company now has channels in six Indian languages.
