1) Lok Sabha polls: Narendra Modi to contest from Varanasi: The BJP confirmed on Saturday evening that its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi would contest from Varanasi in the Lok Sabha elections. The Gujarat CM's candidature from Varansi is significance because of AAP's reported plan to pit Arvind Kejriwal against Modi if he chooses to contest from anywhere outside Gujarat. The decision to have Modi contest from Varanasi has been driven by BJP's calculation that his presence in the state arena will be a force multiplier for the party's comeback bid in UP. The largest state, with its share of 80 seats in Lok Sabha, is crucial for Modi's plans to become PM. Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, whose home Lok Sabha constituency is Varanasi will vacate it for Modi and will instead contest from Kanpur.

2) New Sachin Tendulkar silver coins released: A new lot of silver coins bearing retired cricket great Sachin Tendulkar's face embossed on them along with the number of Tests (200) he had played was launched by Valuemart Gold & Jewels, in association with Diamond India on Friday.

3) Second and Third phase of Lok Sabha elections notification issued:President issued notification regarding second and third phase of Lok Sabha elections. According this notification Lok Sabha elections will be held on 9th April 2014 and 10th April 2014 in which 93 constituencies spread across 18 states which includes Delhi. On 9th April elections will be held in 7 constitutions in 5 states. On 10th April 2014, election will be held in 86 constituencies in 13 states including 7 in Delhi.

4) 10th Young Indians summit begins: Young Indians (Yi), an integral part of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), organised the 10th Yi National Summit on the theme ‘India - The Future is Now,’ in New Delhi. Rajeev Gupta, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, inaugurated the summit and delivered the keynote address.

5) World T20 kicks off on Sunday: The fifth edition of ICC World Twenty20 will kick off in Bangladesh on Sunday. Bangladesh meets Afghanistan in Dhaka while Nepal takes on Hong Kong at Chittagong in first round matches.

6) 11 hours for voting in Lok Sabha polls: Voters across India, barring the northeast, will be given 11 hours - from 7 am to 6 pm - to cast their ballot for the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission said Saturday. In the most of the northeast region, people will get 10 hours - between 7 a.m. and 5 pm - to vote, while in Manipur and Nagaland - where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act is in force - polling would take place till 4 pm due to security reasons. The general election will be held in nine phases - starting April 7 and ending May 12. Counting of votes will take place May 16.

7) President extends greetings to citizens ahead of Holi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday extended his greetings and felicitations to fellow country ahead of Holi, which will celebrated across the country on March 17. "On the happy occasion of Holi, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens," Mukherjee said in a statement.

8) Mitchell Johnson ruled out of World Twenty20: Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will miss cricket's World Twenty20 tournament because of a toe infection.


9) Sindhu, Kashyap lose in semis, Saina out in quarters: Hours after causing the biggest upset of the tournament, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu crashed out of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold losing to fast rising Chinese youngster Yu Sun 21-18 , 12-21 , 19-21. Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap joined the casualty list thereby ending Indian campaign at Basel.
