1) Sri Lanka clinched their maiden T20 world cup: India’s quest for a historic treble ended in heartbreak as a gutsy Sri Lanka produced a clinical display to win their maiden CC World T20 trophy with a convincing six-wicket victory on Sunday. Sri Lanka thus became third time lucky in the World T20 summit clash while Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s dream to win a record third World title lay in tatters as his team faltered when it mattered the most. Despite Virat Kohli’s belligerent 77, Yuvraj Singh’s excruciatingly slow innings of 11 off 21 balls left India with a very modest score 130 for four in 20 overs. Kohli’s brilliance went down the drain due to Yuvraj’s struggle. Sri Lanka faced a few anxious moments in the early stages of the chase but eventually overhauled the target with 13 balls to spare.Virat Kohli was declared the 'Man of the Series'.

2) Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP back in NDA, joins hands with BJP: In a boost for the BJP on the eve of the first phase of polling, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) returned to the NDA on Sunday, ignoring strong protests from local units of both the parties. Announcing the poll alliance, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu said, “What is important is we have to defeat the Congress at the national level. This is a historic tie-up and I am confident the NDA will win 300 seats. I appeal to all TDP and BJP leaders not to oppose this and instead unite to win in this election.’’ The TDP has returned to the NDA after a decade — the party left the alliance after the 2004 loss, blaming the BJP for the Gujarat riots.

3) India enter Davis Cup World Group playoffs: The Indian Davis Cup team entered the World Group playoffs after notching up a historic away triumph over Korea following Somdev Devvarman's win over Yong-Kyu Lim in the reverse singles of the Group I Asia/Oceania second round tie here on Sunday.

4) Punjab beat Odisha to retain Junior Men National hockey title: Punjab closed the championship in style, as they stunned Hockey Odisha 6-2 in the finals of the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2014 (Division A), played on Sunday in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and retained the championship title. In an exciting finals of the 4th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship (Division A), the defending champions Punjab held Hockey Odisha back on their feet as the penetrated a total of six goals to bag the championship title for the second time and let Hockey Odisha keep a mere two goals in their account.

5) Lewis Hamilton wins Bahrain Grand Prix thriller for Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton won a thrilling Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday after a duel with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in a floodlit night race full of overtaking and wheel-to-wheel battles. The win - in Formula One's 900th grand prix - was the Briton's second in a row, the 24th of his career and also a second successive one-two for a team in a class of their own and with two drivers free to race each other from start to finish. Mercedes have now won all three races so far in 2014.

6) Australia bags women’s World T20 title: Two-time defending champion Australia powered to a six-wicket win over old foe England to win its third consecutive title in the women’s World Twenty20 in Dhaka on Sunday.

7) Nigeria overtakes South Africa as the largest economy of Africa: Nigerian GDP clocks over $500bn after the country rebased the GDP calculation first time since 1990. Nigeria, with a population of over 17 crore, is the most populous country in Africa.

8) Lee Chong Wei wins third India Open Super Series title: Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei proved why he is the World No.1 badminton player by thrashing No.2 Chen Long of China in straight games to clinch his third $250,000 India Open Super Series men's singles title in four years here on Sunday. The top seed needed only 55 minutes to better Long 21-13, 21-17 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. In a repeat of last month's All-England Open final, Lee won to take a 9-8 lead in career meetings.


9) Shixian Wang won third India Open Super Series women's title: In an all-Chinese women's singles final, All-England champion Shixian Wang, seeded second, kept her cool at crucial moments to overcome Olympic champion and top seed Li Xuerui 22-20, 21-19 in 47 minutes
