1. NATO Summit- Wales 2014
i. Wales is hosting the largest gathering of international leaders ever to take place in Britain at the NATO summit on 4 to 5 September 2014.
ii. This will be the first NATO summit since Chicago in 2012, and the first NATO summit in the United Kingdom since Margaret Thatcher welcomed NATO leaders to London in 1990.
iii. President Obama, Chancellor Merkel and President Hollande are expected to attend along with leaders and senior ministers from around 60 other countries.
iv. The summit comes as NATO draws down from its longest ever mission in Afghanistan and against a backdrop of instability in Ukraine. It is an opportunity to ensure that NATO continues to be at the forefront of building stability in an unpredictable world.
Announcing that Wales would host the NATO Summit 2014, the Prime Minister ‘David Cameroon’ said:
i. It’s a great moment for Wales to advertise its modern and economically brilliant face to the world. We are going to have up to 60 world leaders coming to Wales for this vitally important NATO conference, so I think it’s a very good moment for Wales to put its best foot forward.
ii. We had the G8 in Northern Ireland, we had the Olympics in London, we’ve got the Commonwealth Games in Scotland - it is Wales’ turn for one of these big events, a great showcase for Wales and a great opportunity and I’m really pleased that we are going to be doing that.
2. PM pays tributes to Radhakrishnan on Teachers' Day
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on the occasion of Teachers' Day, saying the late President still remains an inspiration for the entire country.
ii. "The Prime Minister paid tributes to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on the occasion. Teacher, scholar and statesman, he remains an inspiration for the entire nation," a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said.
iii. Modi also extended his greetings to teachers on the occasion. "Teachers' Day greetings! We salute all teachers, who tirelessly light the lamp of knowledge," the statement said.
iv. Teachers' Day is celebrated every year on September 5 to mark the birthday of Radhakrishnan. Teachers 'tirelessly light the lamp of knowledge'
ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO THINK CRITICALLY: PM TO TEACHERS
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India should regain the status of 'vishwaguru' (leader in education) by according high respect to teachers whom he asked to encourage students to think critically about issues concerning nation.
ii. In an email message to teachers, he told them that their determination and sincerity will shape the destiny of the nation as they are laying the foundation and the building blocks of the society.
iii. "Teaching is not just another profession. It is a divine responsibility to guide and enlighten," Modi said in his message of greetings. He said that by according high status to the teaching community, India had once attained the status of 'vishwaguru'. "We must once again accord such respect to the teachers and thereby regain that status where India becomes the beacon of knowledge for the entire world," he added
3. Tony Abbott, the Prime Minister of Australia launched New Colombo Plan
i. Australian Government's New Colombo Plan for India was launched at Mumbai University on 4 September 2014 by Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott. The plan was launched and the MoUs were signed at the time when Australian Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott is on a two day visit to India. He was on a two day visit of India from 4 September to 5 September 2014.
ii. The plan was launched to enhance student exchange and collaboration between universities of the two countries. At the event, fourteen memorandums of understanding were signed between the Universities.
Aim of the New Colombo Plan
Canberra’s New Colombo Plan aims at lifting knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study in India.
Plan involves
• Scholarship programme for study up to one year
• Internships or mentorships
• A flexible mobility grants programme for short- and long-term study
The plan will be implemented from the next academic year.
4. Axis Bank once again features in Forbes Asia's FAB 50 list
i. Axis Bank which is India's third largest private bank has been featured in Forbes Asia's FAB 50 list of 2014. This is the fourth time that Axis Bank has been featured and is amongst the only two banks in this renowned list.
ii. The FAB 50 comprises of the best of Asia-Pacific's biggest publicly traded companies, chosen from a pool of 1,300 companies in the region that have at least USD 3 billion in market cap or annual revenue.
iii. In January this year, Axis Bank became India's first private sector bank to open a branch in China
5. Indo-Nepal joint military exercise Surya Kiran-VII concluded at Pithoragarh
i. Indo-Nepal joint military exercise Surya Kiran-VII concluded at Pithoragarh. The exercise was seventh in the series.
ii. The 14-day exercise was based on to practice counter insurgency, jungle warfare and disaster management under the aegis of the Indian Army's GARUD division. The exercise has also boosted bilateral ties between the two countries.
iii. Surya Kiran aimed to create a greater understanding between the Indian and Nepalese armies and develop expertise in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrains.
6. GVK EMRI signs MoU with NTRI Australia to improve trauma care
i. The emergency management services provider GVK EMRI has signed a memorandum of understanding with National Trauma Research Institute, Australia to improve emergency trauma care services in the country.
ii. The memorandum was signed by GVK Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of GVK and Russel Gruen, Director, NTRI in the presence of the Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbot and G.V Ramana Rao, Head, EMLC & Research.
iii. This partnership further enhances the network of emergency transport services managed by GVK. The expertise of NTRI Australia is expected to develop regional trauma systems that provide injured people with lifesaving care at the roadside, rapid transport and timely treatment of their injuries.
iv. The collaboration aims at developing model regional trauma systems linking ambulance and hospital services, developing protocols to guide treatment and transport of patients and offer training in trauma care.
7. US comedian and TV host Joan Rivers dies
i. One of America's best-known comedians and TV host, Joan Rivers has died. She was 81. She had been on life support in Mount Sinai Hospital since having a cardiac arrest in New York last week.
8. Hamilton quickest at first Italian GP practice
i. Lewis Hamilton showed no signs of carrying over frustration from his disappointing Belgian Grand Prix by topping the timesheets from Jenson Button at Friday’s first practice for the Italian Grand Prix.
ii. Mercedes driver Hamilton set the fastest lap time of 1 minute 26.187 seconds around the 5.793-kilometre Monza track, with his former team-mate Button 0.623 seconds behind in a McLaren.
iii. Drivers’ championship leader Nico Rosberg was third, guiding his Mercedes round 0.808 seconds off the pace set by Hamilton.
iv. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, the only driver outwith the Mercedes pair to win races this season, had a low-key session to finish 16th.
v. Former world champions Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) were fourth and sixth respectively, either side of Kevin Magnussen (McLaren)
